During this year’s Senedd elections, we’re asking all candidates to commit to working towards ending the need for food banks.
These elections are an important opportunity to call on candidates to commit to our vision of a UK without the need for food banks.
No one should be forced to turn to charity because they can't afford the basics.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit, more people than ever have been pushed into destitution, unable to afford the essentials that we all need to survive. This has led to unprecedented numbers of people needing emergency food.
However, these problems are not new. The Covid-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight and accelerated many of the issues that communities were already facing. In Wales, there has been a 56% increase in emergency food parcels provided by food banks in the Trussell Trust network between 2015/16 and 2019/20. This isn’t right.
Every candidate standing in these elections has the opportunity to use their power and influence to deliver the policy changes we need to build a hunger free future for our community.
Write to your local candidates to ask them to commit to working towards ending the need for food banks, and for the next Welsh government to develop a plan to make this happen which:
- Ensures everyone is able to afford the basics.
- Helps local and national services work together to ensure people get the right support at the right time.
- Involves people with direct experience of poverty and local food banks in shaping any plan to end the need for food banks.
It's quick and easy to contact local candidates - simply email them using our online form now and ask them to pledge their support.

We're using candidate data from the crowdsourced Democracy Club project. If you can't see a candidate that you were expecting, it's probably because we don't have an email address for them. You can help fill gaps in the dataset here: https://candidates.democracyclub.org.uk/
